About Bulgaria Print

Location: Bulgaria is located in the South-Eastern Europe, in the Eastern part of the Balkan Peninsula. The country occupies not a large area of 111 sq. km, but has an exquisite diversity of nature resources. The territory of Bulgaria is divided into two parts by the Stara Planina (Balkan) mountain, as it`s bordered to the East by the Black sea coast, to the West by Serbia and Macedonia, to the South by Greece and Turkey, to the North by Romania. The total length of the country borders is 2245km, including 686km river borders (Denube river) and 378km sea borders (Black sea).

 

Geography: Bulgarian landscape is very rich and various. Plain and hilly lands occupy 41% of the territory of the country, mountains – about 28%, lowlands - 31%. Mountains are the beauty of the country, as the highest mountains in Bulgaria are Rila (with its highest peak Mussala – 2925m), Pirin (highest peak Vihren – 2914m) and Stara Planina mountain (highest peak Hristo Botev – 2376m). In the south part of Bulgaria the Rodopi mountain is situated and connects the country with Greece. The Denube plain land is a vast plain territory in the north part of the country. To the East the Bulgarian Black Sea coast is spread with its typical vast beaches with picturesque rocks in the sea. The main Bulgarian rivers are Denube, Iskar, Tundja, Maritsa and Yantra.

 

Population: The population of Bulgaria is 7,8 million people, as 68% from it live in the big cities and towns. The capital city of Bulgaria is Sofia, where more than 1million inhabitants live. Other big cities in the country are Plovdiv, Varna, Bourgas and Russe.

 

Language: The official language in Bulgaria is Bulgarian, the official religion is the Orthodox Christianity, as 85% from the population are Christians and 12% are Islamic.

 

Politics: Bulgaria is a democratic republic, a member of the European Union from 01.01.2007.

 

Climate: Bulgaria is situated in the border between the moderate and the Mediterranean climates. In the most part of the country the climate is moderate-continental, as in the South part it goes into Mediterranean. In North Bulgaria there are four strongly presented weather seasons. The summer is dry and hot with average air temperature of 26-28 C degree, winter is cold and snowy with average temperature of 0 C degree.

 

Nature: Bulgaria has unique diversity of nature. The country has 380km beach coasts with splendid beaches, plain lands, high hills, more than 500 mineral sources and unique nature beauty, a rich variety of flora and fauna. In Bulgaria there are 3 National Parks with 193 048 ha area, 55 reserves with 75 975 ha area, 9 nature parks, which spread from the Black sea to the Pirin mountain.
